Australia’s second largest city, Melbourne is chock-full of culture, art and green spaces, and surrounded by gorgeous Australian countryside, such as the Yarra Valley wine country and the Dandenong Ranges National Park.

While it’s a relatively new city, Melbourne is brimming with history and things to see and do.

Situated on the Yarra River, Victorian houses blend with modern skyscrapers to create an impressive skyline, with sights such as Parliament House, St Patrick’s Cathedral and Flinders Street Station.

However, the arts scene is one of Melbourne’s biggest draws, and the National Gallery of Victoria is a must visit, as one of the oldest and largest public art museums in Australia.

Further out of the city, the suburbs of Melbourne all have their own unique characters and are worth exploring.

For example, in Fitzroy, you’ll find bohemian cafés and galleries, some of the city’s most beautiful architecture in Little Italy and beaches and parks in St Kilda to the south.

Finally, sports fans will be right at home in Melbourne, as the city is home to the Australian Open tennis tournament, the Australian Grand Prix and Melbourne Cup horse-racing event, as well as of course rugby, cricket and Australian rules football.

Unfortunately, there are no airlines offering direct flights from Manchester to Melbourne, although there are a number of indirect routes available.

For example, Qatar, Etihad and Emirates offer routes which stop in Doha, Abu Dhabi and Dubai respectively, with the average flight taking around 23 hours.

Melbourne Airport, also known as the Tullamarine airport, is located about 21 miles north-west of Melbourne city centre, and you can find car rental, taxi and bus services just outside of the terminal building.

The SkyBus express bus service runs 24 hours a day, with departures every ten minutes, and a one-way journey to Southern Cross Station taking 20 minutes, with a ticket costing $18 (around £11).

Finally, remember that visitors from the UK to Australia must apply for an eVisitor Visa before departing, which is free of charge and will allow them to stay for up to three months.
